The social and urban geography group at the Institute for Housing and Urban Research conducts research on migration, residential segregation, ethnic relations, urban development, regional and urban housing policy and planning. Our research contributes theoretically and empirically to several important fields of urban studies. Some issues in focus in our studies are the issues of neighbourhood effects, housing and social mix policies, area-based urban development policies, selective migration in relation to segregation, vacancy chains, the role of public housing, and housing discrimination. Our research has had its main emphasis on developments in Sweden, but comparative European research is of growing importance.
Group members have strong interests in theoretical and methodological development within social and urban geography. We possess an internationally unique database: GEOSWEDEN. This database now contains yearly (longitudinal) geocoded data on all residents in Sweden 1990-2008, including demographic and socioeconomic characteristics with precise coordinates and neighbourhood area codes for homes and workplaces. This enables us to conduct dynamic analyses of neighbourhood change, migration, commuting etc.
Although several of our projects use quantitative data many research questions need survey- and interview based type of information. Hence, the use of GEOSWEDEN is often combined with more intensive, case study research designs.
