Research and teaching
My main fields of research in the 1980s were urbanization and internal migration, and some of this research is summarized in my doctoral thesis (1987). Although I did some regional and economic geography research both during and after my PhD studies, my primary focus since the late 1980s has been on issues connected to the immigration to Sweden (refugee settlement patterns, refugee dispersal programmes, internal migration from an ethnic perspective, uneven integration processes, residential segregation, ethnic clustering, neighbourhood restructuring policies. Since 1995 some of this research has been conducted in close relation to other social scientists in Europe working with urban development, urban governance, segregation and social exclusion. The research is summarized in the project section, with reference to some other websites and to the list of publications.

Like other researchers at the Institute for Housing and Urban Research, I do about 20% teaching at my 'subject department' (Geography) in Uppsala. Although most of this comprises supervision of PhD-students, and to give courses within the PhD-programme, I also take part in some courses at the under-graduate and master levels (primarily in a basic course on Urban and Social Geography). As the topic for my research has attracted a lot of political interest in the past decade, I have given a large number of presentations and guest lectures at various academic and non-academic institutions, and I have also done consultancy for many governmental and other public bodies (ministries, state boards, municipalities).
